RefuAid

RefuAid is a really positive non-profit organisation which helps asylum seekers in the UK to access education and training to further or adapt their skills to the UK context.

RefuAid provides tutors or places at partner language schools for IELTS and OET exams for people who have sought asylum in the UK. They also help access grants and scholarships to fund further education at UK colleges and universities.
Volunteer EFL teachers can sign up for a minimum of 2 hours a week. You will be assigned (a) student(s) for one-to-one or small group classes. Most courses in my experience are about 10 weeks long. You do not need to commit to any period longer than one course, although, hopefully, you will want to take on another course. You will need a DBS check and experience teaching IELTS or OET exam courses.

I have taken one one-to-one course and two small group courses online so far and have signed up for another course starting soon. In my experience the students are very motivated and keen to work hard. My students have all had conditional offers of a place at university before taking the course and a clear idea of their future goals. I schedule weekly classes of 1.5 hours and expect to spend at least half an hour marking work. My students have a Google classroom they can access at any time to review their class PPTs, submit & view homework, and access various optional extra work.

There is some flexibility with class times. On occasion I have had to reschedule classes around personal commitments and the students have been great about doing this. RefuAid also have a wealth of their own teaching resources and have plans for webinars for teachers.
